Thank you for this article. I have always blamed myself for being emotionally weak, a sissy because I could not stop crying in very hard, emotional interpretation.(rape, lost of a 17 year old child, dead of a baby and so on) It is great to know that it is just part of being a human being that happens to be an interpreter. Now I believe that the social workers, the doctors, the hospital staff knew something that I was not aware: vicarious trauma

Thank you again.

Thanks Jill for making the resources and for this article more balanced-- I agree, there's some good information in this article and some well-intended but misguided stigmatizaton of fat people.
Not all fat people are unhealthy and reinforcing the idea that anyone who "just tries hard enough" reinforces the idea that weight is completely in one's control--which is a myth.

Here are some links for those interested in further understanding that fatness is not a death sentence and thinness does not automatically mean one is healthy:

Just some tidbits to point out: a) there is plenty research on the BMI scale that points to its racist and sexist roots which suggests that many racialized persons and females "obesity" is being judged by an outdated scientific tool with serious flaws.
b) "obesity epidemic"..you may also want to look into the HAES Health at Every Size movement (ie Linda Bacon etc.)..
c) links between childhood sexual abuse and obesity...you may want to look at Becky Thompson's work (Hunger No More)
Sometimes the link between childhood trauma and obesity further pathologizes fatness--while there are many folks who are sexually abused who are ont fat or "obese"
You should also check out the Fat Studies Reader (Ruthblum and Solovay)
Thanks for writing this story and for sharing your wisdom...I just wanted to add some tidbits:)
I'm a York U student (PhD grad student)too pursuing studies in body image women and representation. All the best to you! And sorry for the rush of this! My ride to the library is downstairs and honking lol!

Coming from my own experience the general nature of your thoughts their positivity or negativity and of course expert counselling along with the support of friends and family and the amount of daily exercise you do have more impact on your emotional state than tablets..But I find that if I forget to take them I am worse off emotionally.. Regarding anti- psychotic drugs the only good they did for me when I was not as well as I am now was to numb the pain. Tho I was told by my doctor they help me in my thinking.. ... I find insight and counselling has a greater healing effect than tablets..Just thoughts from my own experience...

Nice post, The treatments for Depression should be done, but the effects of the medicine's are not good, so i think these treatments should be done naturally with the help of yoga and meditation.
