Show Me How by Foo Fighters

The Foo Fighters are an American rock band founded by Dave Grohl. In 2022, the Foo Fighters lost one of their members; drummer Taylor Hawkins tragically died while on tour. Hawkins, who had joined the band in 1997, had recorded eight studio albums and was a favourite amongst fans. It served to be another tragic career-related loss for Grohl, who was previously a member of Nirvana and had to navigate the suicide of his bandmate Kurt Cobain.

After Hawkins’ death, the band’s future remained uncertain. However, in 2023, they released their eleventh studio album, But Here We Are. The album was dedicated to both Hawkins and Grohl’s mother, who had died in August 2022. Many of the songs from But Here We Are navigate feelings of grief, pain, and loss. One of these tracks includes Show Me How, the third single from the album.

Show Me How is a particular standout, as Grohl’s daughter, Violet, makes a guest appearance. Together, they harmonize against a backdrop of shoegaze-style guitars and fast-paced drums, producing an immersive, ethereal wall of sound. Through these dream-like melodies, the father-daughter pairing sing about learning to navigate their lives without the guidance of a loved one.

From the song’s chorus: “Where are you now? / Who will show me how?” These lyrics reflect the confusion that can arise after a loved one dies, particularly if it is sudden. That unexpected gap can be tough to fill on one’s own. Grohl lost both his mother and a close friend, while Violet lost her grandmother and an uncle-like figure. Without these major influences, life seems directionless and difficult. It’s not only about grieving a loved one; it’s grieving the wisdom they were so apt at giving.

The pre-chorus of the song reflects a different aspect of loss: “I’ll take care of everything / From now on…” Now that his loved one is gone, Grohl must take on a new responsibility within his day-to-day life. This could be a physical responsibility, like executing a will, but it could also be a metaphorical one. Now, perhaps Grohl feels like he must assume the role that his mother and/or Hawkins played, providing emotional support and guidance to those around him.

Towards the end, the line “I’ll take care of everything” is sung only by Violet. This differs from the rest of the song, where the line was sung by Grohl himself, or by him and his daughter together. This could represent that, someday, Violet will be on her own in a similar way that Grohl is after his mother’s passing. She will have to assume the role that her father plays within their family.

Show Me How is a beautiful, poignant song that explores loss through its delicate lyricism and gossamer sound. It fits alongside the other tracks of But Here We Are, an album that serves both as both a tribute to their fellow band member and Grohl’s mother, and a testament to the band’s resilience.
