Racing of the Mind

Racing of the Mind

The song My Mind (2020) by Tems has been like a friend for me during some of the hardest, busiest times in my life. As a psychology student working multiple jobs while trying to set myself up for graduate school and my future career, life can get really overwhelming. Sometimes it feels like there’s never enough time or energy to do everything.

When Tems sings, “And behind my mind it runs, all these thoughts of troubling,” I can really relate. As my brain is always going, thinking about school, work, clients, and everything I need to do, life keeps moving forward. It can be exhausting, but hearing her say it makes me feel less alone. She’s putting into words what so many of us feel inside.

The line “I don’t wanna lose my focus” sits with me too. It reminds me why I keep pushing myself, even when I am tired. Staying focused isn’t just about school or work; it’s about building the future I want. Just getting through each day, even when it’s hard, it’s an accomplishment.

My mind isn’t dramatic or flashy. It doesn’t promise that life will get easier, or that I’ll suddenly feel calm. But it shows what it feels like to keep going when your brain is racing and your to-do list never ends. It reminds me that endurance, showing up, keeping focus, and pushing through is real strength, even if it doesn’t always feel like it.

Listening to this song helps me accept the mental load I carry and stay motivated to keep going, one day at a time. It’s become my quiet anthem for focus, resilience, and getting through the hurdles in life.
