Sober
The song Sober by Demi Lovato highlights her struggle with substance abuse and recovery. Substance Use Disorder is characterized by frequent, heavy use, and physical and psychological dependence on licit or illicit drugs that affect one’s health, social and occupational functioning.
The title of the song, as well as the line, “daddy, please forgive me for the drinks spilled on the floor” tell us that the narrator’s struggle is with alcoholism. The lyrics are raw and vulnerable, and Lovato expresses sadness at having relapsed and disappointed her family, friends and fans. However, she ends the song on a hopeful note, promising that she will get the help she needs.
Lovato is open about her struggle with addiction and recovery. She wrote on Instagram: “I have always been transparent about my journey with addiction. What I’ve learned is that this illness is not something that disappears or fades with time. It is something I must continue to overcome and have not done yet.”
