Broken Home

Home life is very important for a child’s development. When a child comes from a broken home, they often face mental health challenges too. The term ‘broken home’ refers to a home where the family foundation is disrupted and the presence of one parental figure is unstable. Often in these situations children are left to pick up the pieces left by the absent parent. Often forced to try and rebuild their lives on their own.

Toronto artist Jasmine Zhang (@xia00yuart) created a piece in 2017 depicting the impact a broken home can have on children, titled “Broken Home”. This piece represents the emotional and physical rebuilding of their homes that these children often have to go through. Often in these situations the children are left to rebuild and maintain a semblance of ‘home’ in their new life.

In their piece, the contrast of light and dark shows the light innocence of the children and the dark severity of the damage caused by the situation. A situation in which many children are too young to fully understand.
