Portraits of the Insane (1822)

During the Romantic age, Theodore Gericault created portraits of patients of his friend Dr. Etienne-Jean Georget. In this piece, he painted a “woman addicted to gambling.” It is said that Gericault depicts mental illness as part of the human condition, as seen by the women who’s illnessed he displayed.
