Singer-songwriter Sia’s 2014 hit Chandelier is darker than the upbeat melody would at first suggest. The song is inspired by hard times in the artist’s life when she was beset by depression, as well as addiction to alcohol and painkillers. The lyrics speak of repressed pain, and the artist’s compulsion to drink in a desperate attempt to keep the pain at bay, while the video starkly portrays her inner turmoil:
