Theodore Roethke was a celebrated poet who won the Pulitzer Prize in poetry for his book The Waking. Roethke was a heavy drinker and experienced bouts of manic depression, which he channeled into his work. Much of his poetry was also influenced by the suicide of his uncle and the death of his father.
