Autistic Wonder

Autistic Wonder

Katje Kaase’s poem “Autistic Wonder” describes the unique worldview of a person with autism. The author’s imagery helps the audience develop a picture of how this distinctive and incredible mind functions.

Spirals spun slowly inward
Silence closed the door
The world was small and wondrous
But communication was no more

Deep inside the bubble
A different child submerged
One who flapped and chortled
The old life finally purged

This being seemed to falter
Leaving normalcy behind
But who are we to question
Who has the rational mind?
