Art and Schizophrenia
For the last 15 years of his life, Martin Ramirez (1895-1963) was hospitalized at the DeWitt State Hospital in Northern California with a diagnosis of schizophrenia. During his stay, he completed a collection of artwork that represented his illness, but also crossed its boundaries. Some of his paintings can be seen at the American Folk Art Museum website.
