Returning home to a different kind of battlefield

Returning home to a different kind of battlefield

Journalist Sebastien Junger shares his thoughts on the toll that a broken society takes on soldiers returning home from war. In this passionate TED Talk, he discusses how the high suicide rates and common diagnosis of PTSD seen in veterans may be less about trauma and more about the stress, alienation, and depression that come from trying to reintegrate into a society that is bitterly divided. Junger proposes that “tribalization” may be the protective factor necessary for healthy repatriation, and suggests that the disconnection and polarization in America could be the cause of surging disability rates in the military.
