Grieving in Darkness
“When you lie inside of darkness, it’s hard to see.”
The song “i. Flight of the Navigator” by Donald Glover, also known by his stage name Childish Gambino, describes what it is like to deal with the death of a loved one and the powerful, poignant emotions that are a part of the grieving process. “I. Flight of the Navigator” is named after a movie of the same name in which a young boy is drawn into a spaceship and transported into a world he no longer recognizes, drawing parallels to the character within the song. This song is part of Glover’s album Because the Internet, an album divided into acts, depicting the story of a rich young man dealing with money, mental health, and the loneliness felt within the social media age.
