Staying
Lizzy McAlpine, a singer, songwriter, and producer, contributes to the large body of alternative and indie wistful music. Her third studio album, “Other,” is a full embodiment of raw vulnerability. McAlpine narrates a breakup throughout this project, one in particular being her sixth track on the album. Staying.
The beginning of the song begins with Alpine admitting to her desire for sweet nothings, reminiscing on the what could haves and while her lover might not realise the severity of their current moment, to her there seems to be a disconnect in levels of comfortability and ironically she is so close to her partner yet so far.
She sings,
“Whisper to me, baby, I’m too far gone to care. I wish I could have said what I meant when it was right there… How can you look so peaceful when you know I’m gonna leave?”
She worries about being the only one feeling and making commitments to encourage this relationship. She worries that she cares more than her partner, and although this may be the case, a part of her just wishes to allow whatever they have and accept the fine lines of moments of intimacy, fear, and self-awareness just be held with her-untill she finds the nerve.
Coming to an end, McAlpine circles back into reality and considers that if she admits that this dynamic is not best fitting, she should consider leaving the remains of this relationship behind. Ultimately letting go of the weights, burdens, fear, and unrequited love. But until then, she requests for her partner to hold her firmly while she decides which reality to consider.
She sings,
“Maybe I will be okay, if I let this go forever. Send it into space and watch the planets turn. Maybe I will someday let this go forever. Hold me until I find the nerve.”
