In a Place We Call Home

Grassy Narrows First Nation in Northern Ontario, Canada, has been in the media spotlight for decades regarding mercury contamination from a nearby chemical plant of their water table and food supply. The resulting physical and mental-health challenges faced by the community are well documented. To combat many of the stereotypes attributed to them, the community’s youth developed a music video “Home to Me” to illustrate their lives, showing images of winter snow, school halls, bridges over frozen rivers, and youth hanging out, representing familiar feelings of home. The N’we Jinan Artists project was commissioned by the Cree Nation Youth Council in Quebec to illustrate life in First Nations communities in rural and urban Canada.
