Between Parent and Child
Clinical psychologists Haim and Alice Ginott, authors of the renowned book Between Parent and Child, developed a unique approach to child rearing that combines compassion and boundary setting to encourage positive social interactions and emotional strength. Across a series of short interview clips collected in this Youtube playlist, the two explore simple, yet effective strategies for better communication between parents and their children:
“Our first response is not ours… we hear inside ourselves the script that our parents wrote for us.”
“We need to talk to children the way we talk to guests – meaning, protective of their feelings.”
“I am strict when it comes to undesirable behaviours. I am permissive when it comes to feelings.”
