Childhood Experiences of Trauma

Claudia Hammond, host of Child in Mind Podcast, interviews David Trickey, a Clinical Child Psychologist and Consultant at the Anna Freud National Center for Children and Families. David explains how stressful events can become a traumatic one for children; he explains the common reactions that children have to trauma, and how caregivers can help children in order to reduce adverse childhood reactions to trauma. David emphasized that one of the most important aspects to help children cope with trauma is the caregiver’s ability to help them feel safe and secure, calm, socially connected, and supported while retaining a sense of autonomy. It is vital that children are encouraged to talk and ask questions in order to make sense of what had happened, but to also come to terms with it.
