Crazy Ex-Girlfriend
May is Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) awareness month. BPD is a serious mental illness characterized by rapid mood swings, extreme fear of abandonment, unstable self-identity, self-destructive behaviours and anxiety. A media representation of this is the protagonist of the American series Crazy Ex-Girlfriend.
The plot revolves around Rebecca Bunch (played by Rachel Bloom). She is a smart, attractive and successful lawyer, who gives up her perfect life in New York to impulsively chase down her high school boyfriend. The show depicts her dysfunctional relationship with her parents, struggle with anxiety and depression, and whirlwind romances. Furthermore, the show describes how she finally receives the correct diagnosis and goes to therapy. The title of the show alludes to how borderlines are often described as “crazy”, and the storyline aims to dispel that stigma by ending on a high, hopeful note.
