Hope ur ok

Hope ur ok

Singer and songwriter Olivia Rodrigo is only 18 years old, but is already widely known for the personal nature of her music and its ability to evoke emotions in the listener. In one of her newest songs titled “hope ur ok”, Rodrigo pens a letter to some of her childhood friends. Though it is not explicitly mentioned, lyrics such as “his parents cared more about the bible than being good to their own child”, and “her parents hated who she loved” imply that these friends are members of the LGBTQ+ community, and were rejected by their families because of this.

Despite the heartbreaking nature of what her friends went through, Rodrigo’s song is one of hope and love. To each of her friends she expresses her pride and support for them, as she says:

“Well, I hope you know how proud I am you were created
With the courage to unlearn all of their hatred
But, God, I hope that you’re happier today
‘Cause I love you
And I hope that you’re okay”
