I Can See Clearly Now

Adversity, Depression, Recovery, Healing, happiness, hope, joy, sadness, mental health, emotion

Behind its cheerful and upbeat sound, “I Can See Clearly Now” is a song that arose from profound sadness which was transformed and healed. I  revealed to the artist, Johnny Nash, the joy and hope that was previously concealed from him. Phrasing related to the weather is used beautifully in order to demonstrate how ‘dark clouds’ can blind one’s perception during difficult times, only to reveal the rainbow that may arise once healing has taken place. Juxtaposing his experiences of pain with his newfound joy, hope, and optimism, the listener is reminded of the sometimes forgotten possibility of renewal and recovery.

“I think I can make it now the pain is gone
All of the bad feelings have disappeared
Here is that rainbow I’ve been praying for
It’s gonna be a bright (Bright), bright sun shiny day”
