Abandonment and depression are central themes in the song “Darkling” by South African rap-rave group Die Antwoord. The song was written by group member YoLandi Visser, who was adopted in her infanthood. Her mental state is reflected in the lyrics, “Sometimes I get sad because I didn’t even know who my mommy was. Maybe I was born bad, maybe I need help. ‘Cause sometimes I get sad and I wanna kill myself”
