Abuse

Abuse

Lora Johnson’s poem “Abuse” tells the story of an abusive relationship. The poem highlights the helplessness and self-blame that the victim often feels.

People ask what you do
But I wont say a thing
You said I must keep my silence
As long as I wear your ring.

I deserved you to hurt me
But you don’t need your fist
Next time I’ll do it myself
A razor to my wrist

It’s hard for me to think.
Inside I’m all confused
People say that you’re bad
But it’s me. I’m bad. I’m bruised.

It’s not abuse
You just get a bit out of hand
It’s okay really. I won’t tell.
I understand.
