The Cure for Burnout (Hint: It Isn’t Self-Care)

Drs. Emily and Amelia Nagoski are twin sisters and coauthors of the book “Burnout: The Secret to Unlocking the Stress Cycle.” The sisters are featured in the TED interview series, “How to Deal with Difficult Feelings,” where they discuss the symptoms of personal and professional burnout, as well as how we can overcome it.

Drs. Nagoski share how “self-care” is not the solution to burnout, as we require support and care from others who take into consideration our emotional and physical needs. They note that the idea of “independence as strength” prevents us from making connections and sharing support, which they describe is “the way out of burnout.”

The authors express the importance of completing the stress response cycle, which involves doing activities that use your body after you’ve experienced a stressor. This creates a release and tells your body it’s now safe.
