Feeling Emotions

How do you nurture yourself when you’re feeling hard emotions? Jai Chand + Grayson’s song Hold Yourself is a beautiful ode to holding yourself through any emotions that you are experiencing. The lyrics say:

Hold yourself here

With all of the pain

And all of the anger

And all of the joy

Feel it all together

In this space

In your centre

Hold yourself here

The lyrics are an important reminder that it is good and healthy to let yourself feel all your emotions – from pain, to anger, to joy. People often try to not feel their emotions, which causes more pain in the long run. So many problems in life can result from not letting ourselves feel emotions. As well as from not nurturing ourselves when we do feel hard things. In order to care for yourself, it is so important to let yourself feel what you’re feeling, nurture yourself with “one hand on top of the other”, and remember that if you let yourself feel your emotions, they will go through a wave and then they will release.

The lyrics also speak to the fact that different types of emotions can coexist – that we can “Feel it all together”. We don’t need to numb the pain or numb the joy – and in fact, if we numb one, we often unintentionally numb the other. The singers explain the importance of giving emotions space, and highlight that you can find your “center” and feel grounded even amidst hard emotions.

The beat of the song is almost meditative. This song can be played at the beginning or end of a meditation or yoga session, or just as a comforting reminder when you’re feeling hard emotions, or even to get more grounded and connected to yourself.
