Breathe Me

“Breathe Me” is a 2004 single by Australian singer Sia. The lyrics mention the struggles of feeling worthless, alone, and afraid. Throughout this song, she expresses needing help but not knowing how to ask for it. The main themes focus on depression and desperately wanting someone to lean on. The meaning behind Sia’s “Breathe Me” is a cry for help, a cry for hope, a cry for survival.

“Ouch I have lost myself again
Lost myself and I am nowhere to be found
Yeah I think that I might break
Lost myself again and I feel unsafe
Be my friend, hold me”

Sia has said that, “‘Breathe Me’ is about feeling worried, generally anxious. Being overwhelmed by your own inner dialogue and having some sort of conniption fit and potentially doing yourself some harm, then asking for help.” The very night she wrote it, she had attempted suicide, which she didn’t reveal until a series of interviews in 2018. Sia illuminates the pain she keeps inflicting on herself, while focusing on the importance of needing support.
